Wolfpack Publishing announced the appointment of Jarret Keene, Ph.D., as the new Managing Editor of its horror imprint, Dark Wolf Books. Keene will continue his role as an Associate Professor in the Department of English at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV). The appointment represents a significant investment in editorial leadership for the independent publisher's dedicated horror line.
"We are absolutely thrilled to welcome Keene to the Wolfpack Publishing family," said Jake Bray, President of Wolfpack Publishing. "Jarret's profound literary expertise, his deep understanding of genre fiction, and his proven track record as an author and editor make him the ideal leader to steer Dark Wolf Books into its next phase of growth." This move underscores the publisher's commitment to strengthening its genre-specific imprints with seasoned professionals who bridge creative and academic worlds.
Dr. Keene is a distinguished author, editor, and academic. A member of the Nevada Writers Hall of Fame, his literary works include the dystopian adventure novel Hammer of the Dogs, the Kid Crimson Western series, and the horror short story collection Gateways to Annihilation. He is also the series editor for Las Vegas Writes and has co-edited several anthologies, including Las Vegas Noir and Dead Neon: Tales of Near-Future Las Vegas. His background suggests a focus on cultivating narratives with strong literary foundations and regional or thematic depth.
"I am incredibly excited to join Dark Wolf Books," said Keene. "Wolfpack Publishing has built an impressive reputation for innovation and author-centric practices. I look forward to contributing to the vision of Dark Wolf Books, cultivating new voices in horror, and bringing compelling, spine-chilling stories to readers." His statement highlights the imprint's mission, encapsulated by its tagline "Where nightmares begin," to deliver captivating horror fiction to a global readership.
The appointment is important for the publishing industry as it reflects a growing trend of independent publishers leveraging academic and literary expertise to enhance genre fiction. For readers, Keene's leadership may influence the types of horror stories acquired, potentially favoring works with sophisticated prose, thematic complexity, or unique perspectives, as seen in his own anthologies like Las Vegas Noir and Dead Neon: Tales of Near-Future Las Vegas. For aspiring horror authors, this signals an opportunity to engage with an editor who values both creative storytelling and literary merit, possibly raising the bar for submissions and fostering a more curated horror catalog.
Founded in 2013, Wolfpack Publishing is known for its hybrid publishing model and diverse genre offerings, including Western fiction, action-adventure, crime fiction, mystery, and thriller. The expansion of Dark Wolf Books under Keene's guidance could strengthen the publisher's position in the competitive horror market, impacting industry dynamics by blending traditional publishing rigor with independent agility. This strategic hire may encourage other publishers to seek similar cross-disciplinary talent to elevate genre imprints.
