Dr. Shelly L. Mathewis, a nationally recognized motivational speaker, leadership scholar, and Founder and CEO of Virtue 8 Productions and Virtue 8 Publications, has released her debut memoir, When Strong Women Break: The Strength They Praised Was Slowly Killing Me. The book confronts a reality rarely spoken aloud: that the women praised most often for their strength are frequently the ones carrying the heaviest and most invisible weight.

Written in four "seasons," the memoir traces Dr. Mathewis's journey from performance to collapse to genuine rest restoration—through heartbreak carried in silence, grief that had no funeral, loneliness in rooms full of people, and a quiet season in which even God felt distant. "For years, people called me strong, and they meant it as a compliment," said Dr. Mathewis. "What nobody could see was what that strength was costing me. I wrote this book because I know I am not the only woman who has learned to hold everything together while quietly coming apart."

When Strong Women Break arrives at a moment of growing national conversation around burnout, caregiver fatigue, and mental health—particularly among professional women and women of faith who are expected to be the steady presence in every room. Rather than offering formulas or quick fixes, the memoir sits honestly inside the breaking itself before moving toward healing. "This is not a book about never breaking," Dr. Mathewis said. "It is a book about what is still possible after you do. Breaking is not the end of the story."

Dr. Mathewis brings an unusual dual perspective to the subject. She holds a Doctorate in Organizational Development and Leadership and leads global HR and learning strategies, developing leaders and driving cultural transformation across organizations. She is also an Adjunct Professor teaching undergraduate and graduate courses, and in 2017 she developed the Mathewis Leadership Development Series®, equipping senior leaders across the private and public sectors to lead with confidence and intentionality. In her debut memoir, she steps out from behind those credentials and tells her own story without protection.

The book is structured across four seasons—The Weight of Strong, The Breaking, The Quiet Season, and Beauty for Ashes—and closes with a personal letter the author writes to herself. Rooted in faith and the promise of beauty for ashes, it speaks directly to readers who have been admired for their resilience while privately unraveling.

When Strong Women Break is available in paperback, hardcover, and eBook editions through Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Apple Books, Google Books, and Kobo. The ISBNs are: Paperback: 979-8-9968340-0-6; Hardcover: 979-8-9968340-1-3; eBook: 979-8-9968340-2-0.
