Daniel Berger, a real estate broker with over a decade of experience selling homes across New York and Connecticut, has published a collection of true stories from his career. The book, titled Adventures of a Real Estate Broker: And Other Stories, is a 14-chapter work available in print and digital formats on Amazon. Berger, who owns and operates RE/MAX Prestige Properties out of White Plains, stated that while many agents claim to have interesting tales, he took the step to document his experiences.
The project began in the spring of 2024 as recorded interviews. Berger collaborated with Bailey Herman, a college student and aspiring writer who was dating his son at the time. Herman recorded their conversations, transcribed them, and shaped each chapter in Berger's voice. The manuscript was completed by the following May. However, the editing process encountered a significant hurdle when an AI-assisted editor was employed. Berger reported that the AI produced poor writing despite good formatting, nearly derailing the project. His wife Elyse, an attorney with editorial experience, ultimately served as the final editor, merging the original drafts with salvageable material to create the finished book.
The stories within the collection cover a wide emotional range, from comedic to profoundly human. One chapter details Berger's efforts to assist a 94-year-old man with no family who was evicted from his apartment and had been living in a hotel for three years. Berger represented him in court, helped secure senior housing, and continues to deliver groceries to his new residence. Another chapter, which Berger summarizes as involving skulls, pornography, and guns, illustrates the unpredictable situations brokers can encounter. Berger emphasized that real estate is more about people than properties, noting that agents are often involved during significant life moments where clients need support beyond standard transactional services.
The physical book, a 170-page full-color volume, has become part of Berger's professional toolkit. He now brings autographed copies with personalized messages to listing appointments, offering a more memorable item than traditional marketing materials. The book launched with a backyard party at Berger's home attended by 150 guests, including individuals featured in the stories. Berger also hosts a weekly podcast under the same title, available on platforms like Spotify, Apple Podcasts, and YouTube. This publication matters as it provides an authentic, unvarnished look into the real estate profession, moving beyond sales tactics to reveal the personal connections and societal issues agents navigate, potentially changing public perception of the industry and inspiring other professionals to share their human-centered experiences.
