AIM Higher, Inc., a nonprofit publisher dedicated to elevating powerful and transformative voices, has released 'Mercury Hour,' a book-length poem by acclaimed poet and writer Maureen Alsop. The book is published in celebration of National Poetry Month and represents the sixth title from the organization, which aims to amplify literary works that challenge, inspire, and heal.
Inspired by Juana de Ibarbourou's 'La Pasajera' and enriched by the author's own hand-drawn sigils, 'Mercury Hour' features beautifully distilled stanzas that intertwine passion and grief for disappearing worlds. The collection's graceful four-line stanzas are amplified by Alsop's drawings—including moon phases, concentric circles, and astronomical diagrams—that deepen the atmosphere of dream and meditation.
Despite its attention to brokenness and counterpoint, the collection ultimately affirms poetry's power to restore what has vanished through dream, trance, and mystical vision. Poet Ruben Quesada notes that the poems contain "a spirit that is resilient and thriving," while Eartha Davis describes them as "an internal rain rivering toward light, then more light, then even more."
Maureen Alsop, PhD, is a psychologist and writer with seven poetry collections to her name, including the visual poetry collection 'Tender to Empress' and experimental hybrid novel 'Today Yesterday After My Death.' Her work has appeared in numerous journals such as AGNI, The Kenyon Review, and South Dakota Review. She has won several poetry prizes, including those from Harpur Palate and Bitter Oleander, and recently received a Roderick Centre Fellowship.
The release of 'Mercury Hour' during National Poetry Month highlights the continued importance of poetry in contemporary literary culture. As independent publishers like AIM Higher, Inc. face increasing challenges in the publishing industry, their commitment to releasing works that might not find homes in mainstream publishing houses ensures diverse voices remain accessible to readers. This publication matters because it represents a sustained investment in literary art that explores complex emotional landscapes while maintaining artistic integrity.
For readers, 'Mercury Hour' offers a meditative exploration of loss and restoration through poetic form, while for the publishing industry, it demonstrates how nonprofit models can support works that prioritize artistic vision over commercial considerations. The book is now available through AIM Higher, Inc. and select independent booksellers.
