Amid a national discourse on firearms that often prioritizes politics over personal accountability, veteran firearms instructor Rick Billington is launching a new educational initiative designed to refocus attention on what he considers the core issue: responsible firearm ownership. Billington, founder of Michigan Pistol Academy, has released his latest book, The Responsible Gun Owner, alongside a six-part blog series beginning July 12, 2026.
The initiative seeks to challenge common misconceptions by addressing the mental, legal, emotional, and decision-making responsibilities that accompany the right to own and carry a firearm. Billington argues that the broader conversation has neglected these critical aspects, leaving many owners underprepared. “Far too much of the conversation around firearms focuses exclusively on the weapon itself,” Billington said. “Very little attention is given to the responsibility, judgment, and decision-making that ultimately determine whether a firearm owner is truly prepared.”
The Responsible Gun Owner book explores the deeper realities of civilian firearm ownership, emphasizing preparedness, personal accountability, emotional discipline, conflict avoidance, legal understanding, and decision-making under stress. The accompanying blog series, hosted on the Michigan Pistol Academy educational platform, delves into six topics often overlooked in traditional training: mindset versus marksmanship, self-defense law, conflict avoidance, home defense planning, decision-making under stress, and emotional control.
Billington, who brings decades of experience in law enforcement, conflict resolution, and civilian firearms education, believes many owners unknowingly place themselves at risk by focusing solely on technical shooting skills. “The responsible gun owner should never view a firearm as the first answer to conflict,” he explained. “The goal of proper training is not simply becoming proficient with a firearm. It is learning judgment, emotional discipline, conflict avoidance, and understanding when force should never become necessary in the first place.”
The initiative arrives at a time when national discussions around firearms are highly polarized, often centering on policy debates rather than individual responsibility. Billington’s approach offers a practical framework for owners to evaluate their own preparedness, potentially reducing accidents and misuse. The blog series, which will be released weekly throughout the summer, is intended to provide both new and experienced owners with a broader understanding of what responsible ownership entails.
