Doug Kroeker has spent most of his adult life teaching the Bible. Now, he has distilled that experience into a new book, A Walkthrough of the Bible, released by Writers of the West on July 4, 2026. Kroeker opens with the structure of the Bible, explaining how more than forty authors writing across roughly fifteen centuries produced the sixty-six books. He also addresses why the Hebrew Bible and the Christian Old Testament arrange the same material differently. From there, he moves through major eras: Creation, the Patriarchs, the Exodus, the Conquest, the Kingdom, the Exile, and the return. The book shows how the prophets fit into their historical contexts, how the four Gospels complement one another, and how Paul's letters responded to specific pastoral situations. Doctrines such as sin, salvation, and the church's mission are presented as part of one continuous arc.
In a statement, Kroeker explained his motivation: “I wrote this book because I came to realize that understanding the Bible is not always as easy as those of us who grew up in the church might assume.” He noted that while many are familiar with individual Bible stories, fewer can explain how Ruth connects to David or why Revelation ends in a garden as Genesis began. “Not everyone has grown up in church,” he said. “They were never taught the stories that we take for granted. When they hear a reference to the Exodus or Promised Land, they may have little idea where those events belong in the Bible or why they even matter. I wanted to write something that would help those who are new to the Bible and as an overview to those who are familiar with it.”
The book has received early praise. Sarah Davis, lead editor, called it “the whole Bible, finally standing as one story,” adding that Kroeker “shows it's actually one story, with one grammar underneath it.” Chad Malvo, production manager at Writers of the West, said, “What separates this from the usual 'Bible in a nutshell' title is its refusal to flatten the material.
